What You'll Need
- Your MOTN Unlocked MG1 ECM (included)
- MapTuner Nano NB3 (included)
- Smartphone, tablet, or computer (iOS, Android, or Chromebook)
- MyMapTuner app (free — App Store or Google Play)
- T15 Torx bit and screwdriver
- 10mm socket and wrench
- Trickle charger (recommended — battery must hold voltage during flashing)
- Your MOTN account login (provided by us when your package ships)
Overview of the Process
The MG1 installation has two distinct phases:
- Configure the Nano and add your vehicle (before touching the ECM)
- Swap the ECM and flash the tune (after vehicle is added)
Do not skip Phase 1. Adding your vehicle first creates a backup of your original ECM file and builds your custom tune in our cloud system. This is critical to the process.
Phase 1 — Set Up Your MapTuner Nano
Step 1: Unbox Your Package Remove your MOTN Unlocked MG1 ECM and MapTuner Nano NB3 from the box. Attach the rubber silicone protective cover to the Nano before use.
Step 2: Locate the Diagnostic Port Remove your seat and lift the small panel cover underneath. You'll find the diagnostic port — this is where the Nano plugs in. See the video for exact location on your model.
Step 3: Plug In the Nano Connect the MapTuner Nano NB3 directly into the diagnostic port. A light will appear on the device confirming connection.
Step 4: Download the MyMapTuner App On your device, go to the App Store (Apple) or Google Play Store (Android) and download the MyMapTuner app. Open the app and connect to your Nano.
Step 5: Update Firmware The app will prompt you about a firmware update. Always update to the latest firmware before flashing. Do not skip this step. Sync the device after updating.
Step 6: Create a New Map Tune Account Once your MapTuner account is created Please Contact MOTN for your License Code and Tune.
Step 7: Turn Key to ON Position Turn your ignition key to the ON position (engine off, dash powered). The app will detect your machine. Do not select any tune files at this stage.
Step 8: Add Your Vehicle Follow the app prompts to add your vehicle. This step reads your machine's original ECM file and backs it up to the MOTN cloud server.
> 💡 Why this matters: This backup protects you. If anything ever happens to your ECM, we have your original file stored and can rebuild your configuration without starting from scratch.
Step 9: Sync the Device When prompted to sync — do it. Syncing sends your machine data to our server, confirms the backup is stored, and prepares your custom tune file. Anytime MOTN or the app asks you to sync, treat it as a required step, not optional.
Step 10: Disconnect the Nano After syncing, safely disconnect the Nano from within the app. You're now ready to swap the ECM.
Phase 2 — ECM Swap and Tune Flash
Step 11: Disconnect the Battery Before touching the ECM, remove the negative terminal from your battery. There are two push-pins holding the cover — remove both, then use a 10mm wrench to disconnect the negative cable. See the video for exact location.
Step 12: Remove the Voltage Regulator Bracket To access the ECM, you'll need to remove the voltage regulator bracket first. This requires removing two 10mm bolts from the bracket and two bolts from the voltage regulator itself to create clearance. See the video for exact locations.
Step 13: Remove the ECM Using a T15 Torx bit, remove the four Torx screws securing the ECM. A screwdriver-style T15 is recommended for stubborn screws. Once the screws are out, disconnect the ECM wiring tabs — they pull straight out.
> ⚠️ Note the orientation of your old ECM before removing it. Take a photo if needed. Your new MOTN ECM will have a sticker on the back indicating correct installation direction.
Step 14: Install the MOTN Unlocked MG1 ECM Unbox the new unlocked MG1 ECM and install it in the same orientation as the original. Reconnect the wiring tabs and reinstall the Torx screws.
Step 15: Reconnect the Battery Reattach the negative battery terminal. Reassemble the voltage regulator bracket and any covers removed during disassembly.
Step 16: Reconnect the Nano and Sync by opening the MyMapTuner app, connect to your Nano, and sync the device. Your tune file will download automatically.
Step 17: Select Your VIN and Flash the Tune In the app, select your VIN. You'll see your MOTN performance tune file — and your stock backup file is stored there as well. Select the performance tune and tap Continue. Follow the on-screen prompts (Turn Key on) and tap START
> ⚠️ If your battery voltage is low, connect a trickle charger before flashing. The flash process takes approximately 10 minutes. Do not disconnect or power off during this process.
Step 18: Flash Complete — Sync Again Once programming is complete, the app will confirm. Sync the device immediately. This sends confirmation data back to MOTN's server. This is one of the most important syncs in the entire process.
Step 19: Reset Throttle Position In the app, navigate to Service → Reset Throttle. Ensure your key is still in the ON position and follow the prompts. You'll hear the machine cycle — this is normal. Wait for confirmation before proceeding.
Step 20: Start the Machine and Check Fault Codes Start your Can-Am and let it idle. In the app, navigate to Service → Fault Codes → Read Codes. No fault codes should appear. Clear any codes and confirm they do not return.
> ✅ No fault codes = successful installation. Your MOTN performance tune is active and ready to ride.
Step 2.1: Data Logging (Recommended)
After your first ride, we strongly recommend completing a data log and syncing it to MOTN. This allows our team to verify the tune is performing correctly on your specific machine and make any refinements if needed.
Data logging instructions are covered in a dedicated video — we'll walk you through it when the time comes. Contact us if you need help.

Frequently asked questions
Will this void my warranty?
ECM modifications may affect warranty coverage. Consult your dealer. You can reinstall your original ECM at any time.
Do I need an exhaust for power gains?
The tune improves performance on stock exhausts (throttle response, cooling, torque), but maximum HP gains (8-10 WHP) require an aftermarket exhaust system.
Can I return to stock?
Yes. Keep your original ECM and reinstall it anytime. Or use the MapTuner Nano to flash back to stock calibration.
What if I add more mods later?
The unlocked ECM supports custom tuning. Contact MOTN for revised calibrations as you add exhaust, intake, or other performance parts.
